First news item: last weekend was a referendum weekend in Switzerland. One of the topics was the attempt by the far left to abolish the obligation to participate in the militia army. The REAL goal is of course to abolish the army entirely. In 2011, they already tried to stop the practice of handing military assault rifles and handguns to the members of the militia army, which they take home and are allowed to keep after the end of their service, as private property. The actual wording of the proposed law would not have stopped at that. It would have made gun ownership dependent on a "justification", i.e. a bureaucratic decision, i.e. a complete confiscation. That initiative was rejected by 57.5% of the voters and 19 out of 23 cantons. The new initiative to abolish the militia service was rejected by 75% of the voters and 23 out of 23 cantons (including 6 half-cantons, hence the total number of cantons reporting is 26): www.lenouvelliste.ch/fr/nosdossiers/votations-federales-22-septembre-2013/articles/l-initiative-du-gssa-massivement-rejetee-2753-1219084Here is the web site of the anti-military organization: www.gssa.ch/spip/spip.php?rubrique23You'll appreciate their little "cartoon", which is supposed to imply that unarmed victims are more "evolved" than armed men. Clearly, the majority of Swiss people do not see reality with rose-colored glasses and expect that bad things might happen, sooner rather than later.

Excellent post, Stefan. Very good to see the people of Switzerland still have more brains than a monkey...lol.

Which brings us to the 2nd news item: The latest military training maneuver is based on the assumption that France, crushed by excessive debt, tries to invade Switzerland to force us to accept part of their debt. www.lematin.ch/suisse/armee-suisse-simule-lattaque-dune-france-surendettee/story/28550466The head of the military department, Ueli Maurer, is the only true conservative (slightly libertarian-leaning) in the current executive. And probably also the only one with such a fabulous sense of humor NB: The Swiss government is based on the US model, with one major exception: the president's role was cut up into a collective of 7 people, representing the 4 or 5 major parties. There is no ruling party, there is no opposition. For every topic, new majorities must be formed, ad hoc.

I think this is more correct. Not that I believe we evolved from monkeys, but stupidity has increased with mankind. So much for being [enlightened] Attachments:

I think the US government is based on the Swiss government, since it started with "La confédération des 3 cantons" in 1291 with Uri, Schwzytz and Nidwald if I'm not wrong Other than this, we share the same Federal model, with some specificities in Switzerland like the direct democracy which allows us to force the government to respect our decisions, like the one for the army that was mentioned earlier !

Well said, felipe. Glad you stopped in & hope to see you more often. This site works GREAT (and always has, in near-two years) so if you hang around a while you'll see that, over time. The main thing to remember each time you log in is go up to the upper right corner to the blue & white button marked 'NEW Participated' and click on it to see what's new since last time. Once you get used to doing that it works just as well as Facebook...in fact, better, because you have more control over the text and the videos are larger and everything's easier to read! Lastly, if you haven't (yet) read the GACA Essay, please do so, here:
