Ongoing 9mm vs. .45 debate news...
NEWER Hornady Critical Duty 135 gr. +P 9mm ammo was adopted (for the first time) by an (unnamed) major police department as their standard issue ammo a while back. Since that time, 4 shootings have occurred with it. So far, all resulted in a one-shot stop. I think the whole 'wimpy 9mm' attitude of days of yore can be safely put to rest in light of the great strides forward by Hornady (and other companies) in ammunition design and powder technology of the past decade, or so. I see no need for a .45 (or even a .40) for what the typical street defense scenario entails. If you have (or desire) one of those two calibers, go for it. Just don't put that bias on a new shooter, please. I feel adequate with my Parabellum, today.
Would I refuse to buy a .40, .45 or .357 if a good deal came my way? Of course not! In fact, I still prefer something along those lines in a weapon like a folding stock carbine, for example. For a sidearm, my choice is a 9, thanks.
From Hornady's site:
Introducing the most consistent and reliable barrier ammo on the market.
1) FLEXLOCK® BULLET incorporates two revolutionary Hornady features: the patented Flex Tip® that initiates consistent expansion every single time while preventing any clogging, and the heavy duty InterLock® band that locks the jacket and core together.
2) CANNELURED BULLET WITH CRIMPED CASE ensures no bullet setback during feeding.
3) INTERLOCK® BAND works to keep the bullet and core from separating for maximum weight retention and proven terminal performance through all FBI test barriers.
4) CORE is made of high-antimony lead making it extremely tough, delivering controlled expansion for unparalleled terminal performance consistency through all FBI test barriers. It’s also more economical than similar bonded bullets.
5) NICKEL-PLATED CASES resist corrosion and greatly enhance low-light chamber checks.
Critical DUTY®
Law enforcement and tactical professionals now have a truly advanced, 21st century handgun ammunition solution that delivers the most consistent and reliable urban barrier performance ever created!
