'Real' gun alternatives?...
I know we have a few members (Miss Wanda, in particular) who don't own guns and/or are not considering a purchase. In pondering that, I think a 'better than nothing' option may be this:
There is a company called Max Armory that produces some very realistic-looking blank firing guns. Though they possess no deadly force capability (unless severely misused, that is) when compared to a conventional (non-blank) gun there could be some advantages to owning one. First would be price. For example, you can purchase an R1 Model revolver (which fires either .380 or 9mm PA blank cartridges) right now for $113, plus shipping. That's at least half (or less) the price of any (similar) new gun.
I think the chief advantage is the fact that the 'fake' guns can still make about as much concussion noise as a 'real' one. That could serve to drive off an attacker (even an animal, particularly dogs) who would naturally think the owner was firing an actual (metallic cartridge projectile) firearm. The legal issue there could potentially be that the person firing it would need about the same justification as one firing a non-blank model, lest they be charged with an illegal discharge, criminal threatening, mischief, etc. Again, the person on the 'receiving' end would have no way (at that time) of knowing they were not being faced with deadly force.
Whether Wanda (or anyone else in similar circumstances) thinks this is a viable choice is up to each to decide. To be clear, I'm not advocating this as some sort of PC way of not taking on the mantle of firearms ownership and self-protection, but rather would prefer to see you have a chance to survive a violent break-in or encounter, (as long as you bear in mind that some criminals or wildlife may not retreat, and then you are standing there with little more than a metal club, in hand) rather than depending on a gun-owning neighbor/citizen to come to your aid.
