John's a long-time gun writer, and I have to respect his experience and longevity, but he goes more than just a bit overboard with this statement: "Not liking the 1911 is somewhat like being against apple pie, ribeye steaks and motherhood. It’s almost like being tired of living. The Colt Single Action Revolver Army, the Smith & Wesson double action revolver and the 1911 have not only been built millions upon millions, they are also the basic pattern for millions of other sixguns and semi-automatics." Rontu It's not so much I 'dislike' 1911s (hell, carried one for years, as a tanker) as that I think time marches on, and there are 'better' (maybe not better shooting, but shooting is only part of the equation) alternatives (meaning more utilitarian) available in 2014. I will always give Mr. Browning and the 1911 their historical and cultural due, but I'm not going to recommend a model of gun based on tradition or historicity, when I think a buyer has better alternatives.

For what I need a gun to do (ride around on my sweaty body, not rust, and shoot, when needed) so far for my dollar I've not found anything better than my SCCY 9mm. Yes, there are 'better' guns (as in guns that might last longer, and be built with higher quality materials) but all the alternatives are (at least) 2x what a SCCY costs, so value for the money is preeminent, here.
