Kyle Lange of Lange Helicopters out in west Texas is one of the countries foremost authorities on hunting hogs and coyotes by air, starting his company in 1978. I saw a recent interview with Mr. Lange in a prominent gun magazine in which he stated two very interesting things.
One, they use 5.56 ARs on the animals. They once used 12 gauge shotguns, but stopped because they found the buckshot they were loading was a poor pig stopper, (requiring them to land and do finishing shots) and the recoil was beating up their client hunters. He also admitted most of the larger hogs (200 pounds, plus) were not stopped by the AR with one shot, so they usually just put 2-3 rounds into the bigger swine, as a matter of course.
